Rotterdam (Jan 2019)
I travelled from London on the Eurostar and spent four days exploring the city.
The determinedly-modern Central Station in Rotterdam, which opened in 2014. I arrived here on the Eurostar from London, a three hour journey, and was literally staying across the road so it was incredibly handy. I had a charming view into the boardroom of the adjacent office block - this area is quite built up.
The city of Delft, famous for its pottery, is only 10 minutes away from Rotterdam by train. You can see some antique examples of Delftware in the shop window here (I also like the way the person who left the bicycle is completely ignoring the signs).
There are two potteries still in Delft making the traditional pottery (most of the stuff in the shops is mass-produced in China). I visited one, De Delftse Pauw, and got a tour around the factory (and bought a traditional Delftware blue and white tile, which I'm not quite sure what to do with).A view of Delft from the tower of Nieuwe Kerk (the new church - it actually dates to the 14th Century). The building in the centre is the townhall. The staircase up this tower was unbelievably narrow, with lots of traffic jams as you encountered people coming the other direction. It made me think of a certain scene in “In Bruges” involving elephants...
Oostpoort, the original East gate into Delft. It appears in one of Vermeer's paintings - click this link to see the painting: **Vermeer's View of Delft**
As I was leaving Delft a convoy of police cars, blue lights flashing, arrived at the town hall and all the cops got out and formed up in a line. I thought there was a terrorist incident or maybe an impending riot. But no...it was - as always, when I’m travelling - a wedding, presumably of a couple of cops. The local man who told me what was going on said his daughter got married in a dump truck. Maybe it’s a Delft thing...
